Obwohl sich Beefs meist auf das rein verbale gegenseitige Beleidigen (Dissen) beschraenken, eskalieren sie mitunter auch in tatsaechlichen koerperlichen Uebergriffen. Der bekannteste Beef der Hip-Hop-Geschichte war der East Coast vs. West Coast -Konflikt in den 1990-er Jahren. Der Tod der beiden Rapper 2Pac und The Notorious B.I.G. war womoeglich ein direktes Resultat dieses Beefs. Beefs sind in der Hip-Hop-Kultur relativ haeufig, aber umstritten. Manche sehen darin eine schlechte Vorbildfunktion fuer juengere Hoerer und warnen vor eventuellen Eskalationen. Andere sehen in dem verbalen Kampf (Battle-Rap) einen elementaren Bestandteil der Hip-Hop-Kultur, der die Beteiligten nicht selten zu musikalischen Hoechstleistungen treibt. Zweifellos steigert ein Beef aber die Verkaufszahlen der Alben und Mixtapes beider Kontrahenten und ist somit auch eine wirksame Marketing-Strategie.
